Abstract: Among inequalities in different spheres in India, inequalities in education, and inequalities in higher education, in particular, are seen as too serious to ignore anymore. In this talk, based on the most up-to-date secondary data, I discuss three important inter-related dimensions of inequality in higher education in India: (a) emerging trends and patterns of inequalities in access to higher education among different socioeconomic population groups, (b) inequalities in household investment in higher education, and (c) changing role of the state and market to (re)produce inequalities in higher education opportunities in the country. With empirical evidence, I reassert the persistence of strong inequalities in access to higher education in India. Also, discuss several newer forms of inequalities in higher education that bring new elements to the higher education policy debate in India.
