Abstract:

The Indian Institute of Technology (IITs), founded in the early 1950s onwards, were exempted from reservation policies until 1973. While their access has been opened up to members of marginalised groups, this formal opening up is far from sufficient to abolish the huge gaps between the academic and social opportunities of students from marginalised groups and those from the upper castes. While the reservation policy claims to combat the effects of discrimination, it tends to reify the low social status of the stigmatised groups and does not guarantee equal access to IIT degrees, nor equal opportunities to use these degrees in the labour market. Thus, at the highest level of technical elite training institutions, caste, captured here through reservation groups, continues to influence educational and social trajectories.

Odile Henry is a Professor at Paris 8 University and Directress of the CSH in New Delhi. Her recent publications on the subject include (with M. Ferry) “When Cracking the JEE is not Enough. Processes of Elimination and Differentiation, from Entry to Placement, in the Indian Institutes of Technology”, SAMAJ ( 2017).
