Abstract:

The study of social mobility, specifically of the intergenerational movement between strata such as social class, has been an important strand of inquiry in the sociology of developed countries. In India, this research establishing macro patterns and trends is more recent within sociology with limited focus on the experiences of women. This talk drawing on national level data, establishes the macro trends in intergenerational social class mobility by gender, caste, community and rural-urban location, and explores the impact of education as a driver for this mobility. While comparing the patterns for women and men, it finds that urban women are distinct not only from other women, but from urban men, both in terms of social mobility chances and with regard to the role education plays.
