The Centre de Sciences Humaines (CSH) and Institut Français, India are delighted to invite you to a Workshop on:

Certification and quality labels as policy tools to promote sustainability

March 29th 2019, IFI conference room, 2, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Road, 11 0011 Delhi.

Summary:

According to standard economic theory, quality labels is a natural mechanism that produces can use in situations where products characteristics and quality are imperfectly observable. The workshop aims at examining the relevance of labels in the specific context of agricultural or food products, by focusing specifically on the “environmental” quality of those. It will contrast the basic economic theory of product quality labeling as applied to agricultural products with its daily practice by NGOs, government officials, and lawyers (who must often defend the certification against “counterfeiters” in both India and France). These two countries exhibit in effect a large agricultural sector (as measured by its share of GDP) while differing significantly in their use of quality certification, with France resorting massively to this mechanism, and India being still relatively prudent on that front.
