Abstract: As far as gender is concerned, the scope of Smart Cities initiatives in India is generally limited to the issue of safety for women. This restricted approach is counter-productive as, paradoxically, it tends to reinforce gender stereotypes by creating new responsibilities and obligations for women. Additionally, the blind belief in purely technical solutions trivializes the issue of gender-based violence and silences the socio-cultural roots of the problem. The article argues that the presence of women in the public space should not be viewed as a governance challenge, but as a societal objective. It offers several suggestions on how to achieve this goal.
