Shubham Mishra is an urban planner trained at the School of Planning and Architecture (SPA), Delhi and the Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC), University of Twente, the Netherlands. He also holds a master’s degree in geography from the University of Delhi. He is currently a PhD candidate at the Department of Urban and Regional Planning and Geo-information Management, at Faculty ITC, University of Twente, the Netherlands. His research focuses on building a Digital Twin of Shahjahanabad – one-time imperial capital and the last of the pre-modern cities of Delhi.

His interest lies in exploring landscapes – both built and natural – to link the present to the past. Most recently, it has translated into ‘www.wohdilli.in’ – a web GIS-portal on mid-19^th century Delhi.  Previously, he has mapped and designed a tree database for Sunder Nursery and the Humayun’s Tomb Complex for Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC). He has also provided planning and GIS support to organizations such as German International Cooperation (GIZ), the World Bank, Centre for Urban and Regional Excellence (CURE) and Forum for Organized Resource Conservation and Enhancement (FORCE), Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) and Sustainable Environment and Ecological Development Society (SEEDS) on issues centered on sustainable urban habitat. His interest in Delhi’s history has also resulted in translation of two Urdu books into Hindi – Intizar Hussain’s Dilli tha Jiska Naam and Rajendra Lal Handa’s ­Dilli jo ek Shahr Tha. He plans to delve deeper into the use of digital technologies to visually depict the varied narratives that have and continue to shape the urban.

As a researcher at CSH, he intends is to explore the spatial history of early to mid-19th century Delhi. He plans to achieve this by mapping the place names mentioned in select classical Persian and Urdu texts about the city onto a detailed 1846 map of Delhi.
