Abstract:

The conceptualization of the ‘Folk music, digital spaces and cultural commons in India’ project, as a collaborative research with folk artists, is a way to make sense of this rapidly changing rubric of cultural production, digitization models, legal mechanisms, and decision making power of folk artists.

Research and documentation visits to Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Meghalaya, Assam and Karnataka, a knowledge sharing workshop organised in Madhya Pradesh, as well as online consultations with folk singers and folk instrument makers, legal and technical experts, community elders, scholars and poets, archivists, music directors from regional film industry, faculty of formal and informal educational institutions have informed the research.

Key themes emerging from the research have centred around the learning, practice and performance of folk music, livelihoods and emerging trends, caste, ethnicity and gender dynamics, cultural commons, the role of community, educational and cultural institutions, and navigating the impact of changes in technology and legal mechanisms on folk music practices.
