Call for Paper for panel on “Claiming minority status?” at 6th Congress of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies, deadline 8 December 2024
Julien Levesque (University of Zürich) an associate researcher at the CSH and Laurence Gautier, a researcher at the CSH are organizing a panel entitled “Claiming minority status? Modes of identification and mobilization among Muslims in minority contexts” for the 6th Congress of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies (GIS MOMM), which will be held at the University of Strasbourg (France) on 24-27 June 2025.
The panel will probe the dialectical relationship between minority identification and religious identification by focusing on Muslim populations in minority contexts (India, but also Europe, North America, Latin America, China, Africa, etc.). Our panel will examine to what extent Muslims in minority settings have appropriated the concept of minority to define their place within plural societies. They will ask, first, to what extent does identifying as a minority lead these populations to redefine the concept and contours of the “Muslim community”? Second, how far have Muslims drawn on the Islamic tradition to give meaning to their minority status? Finally, they will examine how Muslims sometimes rejected the minority label, seen as a source of subordination and marginalisation.
They look forward to receiving contributions from various disciplines (history, sociology, anthropology, political science, Islamic studies) that explore these questions.
