Abstract:

This workshop explores the evolving political dynamics among student’s organizations in Indian universities. Over the past decade, Indian campuses have become significant arenas for political activity, reflecting broader social and ideological changes. Based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted in Delhi, Hyderabad, and Aligarh, this research examines the collective actions, political strategies, and ideological variations of major student unions. The presentation delves into how these student organizations mobilize to address political challenges and safeguard their rights amidst a shifting social and political landscape. By integrating qualitative and quantitative methodologies, the study offers a comprehensive view of the diverse ideologies and alliances that shape student politics. It also highlights the broader political and moral life on campuses.

This session aims to shed light on contemporary transformations in the Indian student movement, providing insights into the various forms of student politics within the university environment. Through sharing findings, as well as ongoing intuitions and questions from the fieldwork, this workshop hopes to contribute to a deeper understanding of student politics in contemporary India.

Speaker:

Hugo Dones graduated from Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University, with a BA diploma in Philosophy and Sociology in 2021, and an MA diploma in South Asian Studies from the School for Advanced Studies in Social Sciences (EHESS) in 2023. He is now a fully-funded PhD candidate in Political Anthropology at EHESS in the CESAH (Centre d’Etudes Sud-Asiatiques et Himalayennes). His research interests encompass social movements and activism and his dissertation project focuses on student politics in India at three different campuses in Delhi and Hyderabad. He looks at the transformation of student movements from 1936 until today, with a particular emphasis on student unions. He employs a mixed-methods approach (ethnographic and archival research) to explore the dynamics of Indian campuses.
