About the talk: This talk explores governance of urban commons through placemaking as a crucial pathway to sustainable and inclusive urban futures, offering rich avenues for research and innovation in practice for architects and planners. The speaker will reflect on the I’Local placemaking initiative at Hyderabad Urban Lab, through three key lenses:
1) Placemaking as a practice of returning land to the people as shared commons.
2) Incremental development as a return to John Turner’s  valorisation of autoconstruction, incrementalism and autonomy particularly focusing on neighborhood development and service provisioning.
3) Infusing new value into local spaces by making them accessible to diverse stakeholders and allowing them to invent new uses and values.
These lenses not only frame new approaches to urban governance but also highlight the potential for architects and planners to drive innovation and community engagement in the Global South, with particular relevance to cities like Hyderabad.

Speaker:

Anant Maringanti is founder director of Hyderabad Urban Lab an interdisciplinary team dedicated to tackling complex urban challenges in the Global South. His work merges theoretical research with practical action, empowering marginalized communities and influencing urban policy. He is committed to mentoring the next generation of scholars, promoting geographical thinking, and fostering collaborations that bridge academia and real-world impact.

This is the one hundred and seventy-fifth (175) in a series of Urban Workshops planned by the Centre de Sciences Humaines (CSH), New Delhi, and Centre for Policy Research (CPR). These workshops seek to provoke public discussion on the city’s development issues and address all its facets including its administration, culture, economy, society, and politics.
