Abstract:

Global South populations, firms and governments play a key role in redefining the relationship between sciences, technologies and markets on an international scale. This volume contains rich case studies studying technoscientific globalization ‘from below’ drawn from fieldwork in Asia, Latin America and Africa, examining the interplay between technology, power, and society. It shows that forces shaping the future of global technoscience emerge from unexpected places, prompting a reassessment of global power processes. The cases are grounded in postcolonial Science and Technology Studies and address a range of topics including pharmaceutical markets, scientific developments and digital practices. They illuminate the multiple creative ways in which subaltern players appropriate, divert, overturn or bypass prevailing views on technology and market construction.

Speaker:

Mathieu Quet, sociologist, is a research director at Institut de recherche pour le développement, and a member of the Centre Population et Développement (CEPED). His research focuses upon the social aspects of pharmaceutical development in India, and he is more generally interested in observing the globalisation of technological markets from Global South countries. He also authored Illicit Medicines in the Global South. Public Health Access and Pharmaceutical Regulation (Routledge 2021). His latest project documents the manufacturing process of antivenom in India.
